On Tuesday, January 18, 2011, a gas main exploded in Northeast Philadelphia, injuring three Pennsylvania Gas Works employees and a firefighter. A Philadelphia Gas Works employee was also killed in the explosion. The workers and firefighter had responded to a gas and water main break in the Tacony neighborhood, and were working at the scene when the explosion occurred. The injured workers are being treated at Aria-Torresdale Hospital for burns and injuries to the air passages. The explosion has forced 15-20 households to be evacuated, including 24 people from a senior care home.
