The Defense Act of January 28, 2008 has extended eligibility for veteran administration benefits for combat veterans. Veterans have until January 27, 2011 to sign up for veteran administration benefits and become enrolled in a Priority Group 6 or better group. Priority Groups range from 1 to 8, with Group 1 being the highest. The extension applies to all veterans who were discharged before January 28, 2003 and apply after January 28, 2008. If the application deadline is missed, the veteran could fall into a lower priority group. Groups are income based if a veteran has no service disability.
Veterans discharged on or after January 28, 2008 have five (5) years post discharge to be eligible for enhanced benefits.
