Bill Vetoed for Workers’ Comp Coverage for Firefighters With Cancer

Governor Rendell has vetoed a bill which would have added workers’ compensation coverage for firefighters with cancer. On October 26, 2010, we informed you of House Bill 1231, which would require municipalities to provide workers’ compensation coverage for firefighters who develop cancer caused by carcinogens known to exist in burning buildings.

Governor Rendell justified the veto of House Bill 1231 by claiming that the bill could have led to any firefighter’s cancer to be found as work-related, impose great cost to Pennsylvania municipalities, and that the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors opposed the bill.
