OSHA Asst. Secretary Warns Plant Operators About Hazards

Natural gas power plant operators were sent a warning letter from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) following the gas explosion last February that killed six workers and injured another fifty.

The letter served as a reminder to employers at gas power plant facilities that they needed to take action to eliminate and control hazards that could injure workers.  For example, the letter warns about the risks of using natural gas blows to clean piping systems. Instead, OSHA recommends using non-flammable, non-explosive alternative media to clean piping when gas is needed.

According to OSHA, the February gas explosion could have been avoided with a little common sense and a better adherence to guidelines and safety procedures.

In the warning letter, Michaels writes, “as an employer, you are responsible for eliminating or controlling hazards that may kill or injure your employees in these facilities.  It is the responsibility of all employers, particularly those operating in high hazard industries, to ensure the safety and health of their employees at the worksite.”  This serves a reminder to Pennsylvania workers, that injuries in the Marcellus shale gas industry can be very serious.
